YouTube for iOS updated with AirPlay and console streaming, other improvements
The YouTube team has released an update for its iOS application that features a new “Send to TV”feature for users tired of watching the latest Harlem Shake video on their 4-inch display.
The Send to TV feature, now available in version 1.2.1 of the YouTube app, can stream videos to an Apple TV, Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3.
Using the AirPlay functionality, videos can be streamed automatically to the Apple TV. However to stream to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, you’ll have to do some manual pairing directly with the consoles.
YouTube for iOS has also been updated with improved streaming over a slow Wi-Fi connection. Furthermore, the full-feature YouTube app now integrates with the separate YouTube Capture, allowing users to record and upload video.
Along with the YouTube Android app in November 2012, Google announced at CES 2013 that it would integrate the “beaming” feature (as the company likes to call it), with Bang & Olufsen, LG, Panasonic and Sony televisions initially. Philips, Samsung, Toshiba, Vizio, Western Digital and Sharp are expected to sign-on later this year.
Users of iOS can download the 16.3MB update from the iTunes App Store.
