iOS 7 release date pegged for autumn
Apple’s spanking new iOS 7 is up for grabs for developers now. But the company has confirmed that the overhauled operating system will be in the hands of its users by this autumn.
While it did not give a specific date, it’s likely that iOS 7 will roll out alongside the new versions of the iPhone and iPad, both of which are now expected to launch some time in September or October.
In terms of compatibility, Apple says that iOS 7 will run on the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, as well as the iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPad 4. iPod touch 5th gen users and above will also be able to get in on the action.
How well Jony Ive’s major redesign will run on older iOS devices remains to be seen. iOS 6 already struggles somewhat on the three-year-old iPhone 4, so it’ll be intriguing to see how this snappy software works on once bleeding edge kit.
iOS 7 packs in a host of new functions, including Control Center for accessing key functionality with one swipe, new look Game Center and a far sharper tabbed browsing experience in Safari.
